Many of the formal themes that interest me: negative
space, repetitive shapes and lines, textures, relationships
of objects in space, lighting, present themselves outdoors.
I respond to these themes in compositions ranging from the
intimacy of moss growing on the trunks of evergreen trees,
to the geometry, texture and light of old buildings and
machines, to the vastness of mountain ranges and cool valleys.
I am interested in applying the formal concerns of the studio
to the uncontrolled environment “outside” and
finding in composition and light possible resolutions to
the challenges of working in “the big studio”.
These images range from traditional landscapes, to environmental
portraiture, to beach still lives, to architectural features,
all found exactly as they are, and not manipulated or lit;
in contrast to my studio work. The challenge is bringing
the formal concerns to life, but working with the palette
that man and earth and time puts forth. I do not use filters,
polarizers, or flash.
